Electromagnetic VS Electronic

The difference between electromagnetic and electronic in RCD (Residual Current Devices )

Introduction

Electronic and electromagnetic represent the two protection methods for earth leakage function in RCD .Its can be selected based on specific application requirements. They differ in their working principles, structural characteristics, and the materials used.

In general, their primary function is to rapidly cut off the power supply in the event of electrical leakage or electric shock, thereby ensuring personal safety and the normal operation of electrical equipment. Based on their operating principles and structural features, earth-leakage protective devices are classified into electronic and electromagnetic types. This article provides a detailed overview of the working principles,, structural characteristics, and performance comparisons of these two types for reference.

Electromagnetic

Controlled by a Tripper and an electromagnetic coil. The device works when leakage current occurs in the circuit, the electromagnetic coil generates magnetic attraction to trigger instantaneous tripping directly .The tripping energy is derived from the leakage fault current itself,no need extra auxiliary power supply.

It will trip as long as the leakage current reaches the operating threshold, even in the event of a broken neutral wire or a voltage drop.

The tripping function is achieved via an independent tripper and an electromagnetic coil.

  1. No auxiliary power supply is required. The residual current protection still working under broken-neutral, under-voltage and voltage‑fluctuation conditions for high safety.
  2. Strong anti‑interference capability with good resistance to surge, lightning strike and harmonics, Not easy to unwanted tripping or failure to trip.
  3. Suitable for a wide range of operating environments; low environmental requirements.
  4. Difficult to achieve extremely low operating currents (normally a 10mA minimum); complex manufacturing and high costs.

Electronic

Controlled by a PCB Board. It uses a transistor amplifier as an intermediate mechanism. When leakage current occurs in the circuit, the transistor amplifier amplifies the leakage signal and passes it to the relay, and then tripper works,The amplifier circuit requires current from the main circuit to serve as an auxiliary power supply in order to operate correctly.Therefor the prerequisite of an electronic earth-leakage protection device requires current to flow through the circuit first; if the neutral wire is disconnected or the voltage is too low, the protection function will fail, meaning the device will not trip in the event of a leakage.

Controlled by a PCB Board. The current signal is amplified by a transistor amplifier to drive the trip unit to trip. 。

  1. Needs extra auxiliary power supply; The residual-current protection function will fail in case of neutral wire disconnection, under-voltage or voltage fluctuation.
  2. The PCB board is susceptible to interference from lightning strikes, surges and harmonics, with risks of damage and failure to trip.
  3.  It is difficult for the PCB board to pass the withstand‑voltage test.
  4. Electronic components on the PCB board are easy to aging, which may cause protection failure during long‑term operation.
  5. The test button can only verify whether the tripping mechanism works well, but cannot check the integrity of the amplifier circuit board.
  6. It has stricter requirements regarding the operating environment.
  7. It can achieve a very low operating current, (normally a 5mA minimum) .offers high sensitivity at a low cost

Conclusion

Electromagnetic and electronic in RCDs each offer distinct advantages tailored to different needs; Users can select it based on specific application requirements, environmental conditions, and budget. Regardless of the type chosen, Installation and use of a residual current device (RCD) is a crucial measure for ensuring electrical safety, which can effectively preventing electrical fires and electric shock accidents.
