RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) or Residual Current Breaker (RCB) is a residual current protective device that cuts off the circuit when it detects a current leak on the earthing wire. It also protects people from electrical shock or electrocution from direct touch. RCCB ensures protection by detecting current in the line and neutral. In a functioning circuit, the current flow through the line and the return flow through the neutral are equal. But, if there’s any abnormality, the return flow may differ from the line’s present flow. With the help of an RCCB, one can detect such a situation and break the circuit.
Simply saying The working principle of a Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) is based on current imbalance; the device functions by continuously monitoring the difference between the outgoing and incoming currents in the circuit and rapidly disconnecting the circuit when residual current leakage is detected.
And RCCB is only for detects leakage currents and trips to prevent electric shocks.it does not provide overload or short-circuit protection.
ELCB(earth leakage circuit breaker) has Voltage ELCB and Current ELCB .It is designed to prevent human electric shock and fire hazards. It is a voltage‑operated device that continuously monitors the voltage level in the circuit. When voltage imbalance or current leakage to earth is detected, the ELCB quickly disconnects the power supply to avert potential dangers.
For effective operation, the ELCB requires a reliable earthing connection. This connection serves as a reference point for detecting earth leakage, enabling the ELCB to distinguish between normal operating conditions and potentially hazardous situations.
RCBO (Residual Circuit Breaker with Overload protection) It is a combination of RCCB and MCB. It protects against Earth leakage/Overload/Short circuits.The operating principles are the same as those of the individual MCB and RCD,When there’s a current leakage, the RCBO breaks the entire circuit. when the circuit is overloaded the components of the thermal/magnetic circuit breaker trip the electronic device. RCBO offers a more reliable and compact solution by providing both earth leakage and overload protection within a single unit.
RCD(Residual Current Device)is also known as Residual Current Breaker (RCB) or Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB). It is a residual current protective device that cuts off the circuit when a fault is detected in the current flow inside the earth wire. It ensures that the currents in phase wire and neutral wire remain balanced.If there are any irregularities in the current between the two wires, the RCD will disconnect the circuit of the electrical equipment, thereby completely cutting off the power supply.
RCD don’t provide protection against Current Overload. But the main MCB will trip the circuit as RCCD won’t trip in case of a live or neutral faults i.e. short circuit and overload. For this reason, RCBO (MCB with RCD in a single unit) are used for proper protection.
